It was great to see the return of birds to Bloomington this spring, but it wasn’t their singing that was music to Habitat’s ears. Habitat’s joy this spring was the sounds of volunteers hammering away on new homes with our 2008 families. Construction has began on four new homes. Habitat has built mainly in new subdivision's over the past ten years, but this year moved back into developed neighborhoods. Habitat is currently building in four separate neighborhoods.
Bernice Fishel, another Habitat homeowner says she has really benefited from being out at the site so far. “I have learned something new everyday about building! It is really awesome to watch the house being built and I feel so blessed to be working on my house. The volunteers who have been out at my house so far are great and I am so appreciative of them.” Since the groundbreaking ceremonies, work has taken off on the three houses. Habitat’s vision to grow and be able to build more houses each year can truly be seen with the progress that has been made in two months. Habitat hosted a build blitz the first week of June, which hugely contributed to the progress thus far. Construction volunteers worked four full days during that week. We are so thankful to all the volunteers who participated that week. Special thanks go out to the Retired Crew who in addition to their normally scheduled two-day a week morning shifts worked the entire build blitz!
“The joy of meeting new families and volunteers is ours again, and with the faithful volunteers we once again venture forward to construct affordable housing for God’s people in need, said Bill Waller, Construction Manager. This blitz served as a model for the future building practices for the affiliate. It is our hope to shorten the build cycle to build more houses with the same staff levels. So when you are out at the site, keep in mind that your help now and in the future improves our community with every swing of the hammer.” Habitat was also fortunate to have the volunteer labor of Men on Mission (MOM), during our build blitz. MOM is a volunteer group from First Baptist Church in Trussville, Alabama. The group is comprised of men of all ages who volunteer to help build, restore and renovate churches within North America. The group has traveled to South Carolina, Delaware, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, the Gulf Coast and more during their 26th years. We hope you will have the opportunity to stop by and see one of our current houses this summer. We will have two additional houses this fall. Six additional families will move into safe, decent homes this year and next due to our house sponsors and our wonderful donors. Thank you!
